The Jameson sitting between us facilitates our conversation and lures the words and truths from this otherwise reluctant soul. A few rounds into our interview, Samuel discloses that he stopped by Gypsy’s on his way here for two doubles, bracing himself to open up to a stranger. Even with the bolstering of the whiskey, his eye contact is infrequent and fleeting, so what I find remarkable is the space between the quiet soul on the adjacent bar stool and the justly angry, powerful voice behind his prose, as if some other shade of himself takes form when the pen tucked behind his ear hits paper…”

Enter Phillips’ first-ever Covington City Lights Poetry Slam, to be held at 5PM June 24 at The Blue Bar in Covington.

‘I would like the poetry slam to be part of a revolution for this area to just rise up in more spoken word arts other than just poety,’ Phillips said.

Phillips feels like there are plenty of yet-to-be-found pomes and “word art” smiths out there who just need an opportunity to step up to the mic.
